The Shelby County Public Defender is hiring Assistant Public Defenders to provide high-quality, client-centered legal representation to indigent people in the justice systems of Shelby County, Tennessee. Competitive candidates will have a deep and demonstrated commitment to the defense of indigent people; excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills; the proven ability to work both collaboratively and independently; and a strong work ethic. Requirements include graduation from an accredited law school; a license in good standing to practice law in Tennessee, or willingness and ability to attain bar licensure here; and residence in Shelby County before employment begins. Experience as an attorney carrying a significant caseload in an established public defender office is preferred; demonstrated commitment to the defense of indigent people in the justice system and to the mission, vision, and values of the Shelby County Public Defender is required.
Assistant Public Defenders collaborate with investigators and other professionals to advocate for the rights and stated interests of children and adult clients at every level of the justice system, from trial to appeals, by representing those interests zealously and ethically while providing counsel based on law, facts, knowledge, and experience.

Our internship program pairs law students with experienced attorneys to assist with all aspects of case preparation and courtroom advocacy. Law students will have the opportunity to work in various departments within our office, including criminal court, general sessions, direct representation, juvenile defense, appellate defense, capital defense and special litigation. Additionally, our office staffs several treatment courts – mental health court, drug court and veterans court. The Shelby County Public Defender is hiring an Investigator for its Major Cases Team to conduct thorough, independent investigations on behalf of clients facing serious criminal charges in Shelby County, Tennessee. Competitive candidates will have strong interpersonal and interviewing skills; the ability to assess evidence and witness credibility; creative and critical thinking skills; excellent written communication; and the initiative and adaptability to work in a wide range of settings with minimal oversight. Requirements include a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and three years of criminal investigative experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Proof of education and experience is required.
Investigators work as integral members of the interdisciplinary Major Cases Team, collaborating closely with attorneys and mitigation specialists to develop compelling defense theories and advocate for favorable outcomes for clients. Their work includes conducting independent investigations of the state's case; interviewing clients, witnesses, and alleged victims; reviewing and analyzing all discovery, including digital evidence; locating and preserving favorable evidence; liaising with expert witnesses; and assisting with trial preparation.
